On Jan. 14, 2020, CISA released an Activity Alert addressing critical vulnerabilities affecting Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 and 2019. This FAQ is designed to provide you with information regarding the impact to your voting system.
Q. What does this alert mean regarding the security of voting systems?
A. This vulnerability applies to Microsoft systems running Windows 10 and could theoretically allow a system administrator to install malware that would be recognized by Windows as a legitimate program.
Q. My system runs on Windows 10. What do I do?
A. Nothing yet. ES&S is testing the update now and working diligently with the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to obtain and certify a patch via an Emergency Change Order (ECO). We will notify you as soon as this upgrade is ready to be applied.
Q. My system runs on Windows 7. Is my system affected by this security alert?
A. No. Your system is not affected by this alert.
